Barneston [sic], Franklin, MA 15 Sep 1827 and joined Mormons as a boy; moved w. parents to Nauvoo, IL; on trek west, assisted his father in black- smithing; crossed the plains five times as a guide: "The family imbraced [sic] the faith of the Church of Latter-day Saints and were not long in joining the Church at Kirtland, O., where they endured the persecutions of the despised sect, and with them were driven from their home. . . .  He would have been among the first to arrive in Salt Lake had he not remained behind to assist the weak. . . .  He took charge of his mother and four younger brothers and two sisters, as the father was needed to maintain order and discipline in the company.  At the age of 21 years, Charles was left by his father's death, with the responsibility of the family resting on his shoulders"; m.
