Until he was nineteen years old he attended the public schools. he then was employed in his father's butcher shop until the War of the Rebellion (Civil War) broke out. He then enlisted at Smithfield in 1861 in Company A, Twelfth Vijrginia Regiment, under Captain Marr Colonel Massey, in the command of General Sahby and later General Rosser. He served until the close of the war, having many narrow escapes from death and capture. His record as a soldier is a most creditable one.
