Notes:
Edward Ketcham is first found in Cambridge, England from 1619 to 1628, where his
marriage to Mary Hall on 22 Aug 1619 is recorded in the records of the Church of Saint
Andrew, as well as the birth of his children Mary (bapt. 7 May 1620), John (bapt. 8 Sep
1622), Hester (bapt. 10 Apr 1626), and Ann (bapt. 19 Oct 1628). No other records of
Edward or other Ketchams are found in Cambridge.
Edward Ketcham arrived with his wife, Mary Hall whom he had married in Cambridge,
England in about 1619, and their four children, Mary, John, Hester, and Hannah in 1630.
Edwardss wife Mary died 1639 . Edward Ketcham is next found in Ipswich in the
Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1635. He may have arrived in 1630 on the Winthrop fleet
and in 1633 on to Ipswich. By 1637 Edward was reportedly on the Board of Freemen,
the town council of Ipswich. Sometime after January 1640 Edward moved from Ipswich
to Hashamommock, later Southold, Long Island, where in 1651 the first record of him is
found.
. Edward was a surveyor and a farmer and was soon active in the community. In 1633,
Governor John Winthrop sent his son, John, inland to establish a new settlement. With
his hearty band of twelve men, John sailed up the Ipswich River in his shallop on a cool
March day and began his settlement on the banks of the river near the present wharf.
Some earlier exploration must have informed the new settlers that the banks of this tidal
river would provide an ideal place for a new community to be established. Here they
would enjoy the advantages of fresh water, waterpower, good fishing, and an easy means
of transportation. Edward Ketcham was declared a freeman in Ipswich by 1636. He was
recorded as a cattle owner in 1639. He sold his land to Sam Boreman about 1640. He also
remarried about that time to Sarah Salmon and moved to Southold, Long Island, NY.
Sarah was born in Southold about 1643. They had five children Sarah, Samuel, Edward,
Rebecca, and Joseph. They moved across the bay to Stratford, Conn. about 1653. Edward
died there in 1655. His
