Pg. xli RICHARD PUTNAM of Eddlesborough and Woughton is mentioned in the Lay Subsidy of 16th Henry VIII. (1524), as of "Edlesbury," while in those of the 14th and 15th Henry VIII he is styled RYCHARD PUTTYNHN. Eddlesborough is nearly surrounded by the county of Hertford. It was a town of considerable importance as early as 1332. Slapton joins on the west, and Woughton, whither Richard removed, perhaps on the death of his father, who may have been living there, is but a dozen miles to the north of Eddlesborough. Wingrave is about the same distance from Woughton. *** SOURCES: Lois Akin Lowry, "The Andrew Putnam Family," Santa Ana, California, 1959-1961. Pg. 3. "Wicked SIR RICHARD of Eddlesborough" (1523). Lived in Woughton, 1556. He died there. Owned land in Slapton. His will proved 26 Feb. 1556. His widow, JOAN. His sons HARRY and JOHN were still living. Our line of Putnam is descended from "Wicked Sir Richard." "Wicked Sir Richard" is the prize Putnam example of the prodigal son. A gambler - he had mortgaged the inherited estates - he left his wife and children in the care of brother Henry and went off to the Courts of London. Found in the Queen's bedroom, Sir Richard was sent home... in great disgrace. To his credit, however, after years in which his creditors kept suing him, Sir Richard began to repay his bills. He bought back his mortgaged estates, and long before he died was once more held in high esteem.
