Aura WATERBURY
CONFLICT: 4 Jun and 14 of Jun are both given. Later he lived with his parents at Fabius, New York. As a young man he worked in the lumber woods in the Adirondack Mountains, or "the north woods" as the territory was called, cutting heavy logs, piling and binding them into rafts ready to be floated down stream with the spring freshets to the mills. It was a dangerous but exciting task to ride the rafts to mill, and one requiring great skill. The art now exists only as a memory. In later days Aura Waterbury delighted to recall in retrospect those days "when men were men" and to relive for the benefit of the youth the stirring events of his youth. Aura was a contractor and builder in a day when being a "carpenter" meant far more than does such an applelation today. In those days the work now done in mills by machinery was largely done by hand. Included in the hand work were the making of doors and window sash, the shaving of shingles, etc. They lived first in Friendship, then Belfast and later at Cuba.
