    While he was still a child his parents removed to Cuba New York where they 
    remained for a long time, and then removed to Polo, IL, where he grew to 
    manhood. Later he moved to Mason City Iowa, and still later to Waterbury, 
    Jerauld, South Dakota, named after him which he helped to found and build  to
    a prosperous community, with the assistance of others of the same  surname
    from Illinios. Still later he removed to Kimball, South Dakota,  where he
    followed his trade as a building contracter.

    Lewis J. Waterbury had served in the Civil War as a member of the 62nd 
    Illinois Infantry, enlisting at Polo, IL, and serving during a large part  of
    the war. He was a corporal of his company. He was wounded in action,  but
    continued with his regiment to the end of the war when he was  honorably
    discharged. He held membership in the Grand Army of the Republic  at Kimball,
    South Dakota, and apon his death there, 24 APR 1899, was  buried with full
    millitary honors. His death followed an operation.

    During the later years of his life he was in ill health most of time as a 
    result of two paralytic strokes and hence inactive as far as business was 
    concerned. His mind however, remained clear and keen to the end. He was  known
    for his cheerfulness and optimism. He was pocessed of a fine tenor  voice.
    Many of his shut in hours were devoted to amateur cabinet making,  and the
    wittling and carving of various intricate patterns and figures and  which he
    worked with care and percision.
