Edward GOULD

      Edward came to America 1635 on the Elizabeth.  He traveled with a Jarvis Gould who may have been his brother.  Further detail is in PAF Notes


EDWARD GOULD, ORIGIN: Unknown. MIGRATION: 1635 on the Elizabeth (on 9 April 1635, "Edward Gold," aged 28, was enrolled at London as a passenger for New England on the Elizabeth [Hotten 54]).FIRST RESIDENCE: Hingham. REMOVES: Boston by 1657, Hingham by 1663.OCCUPATION: Pail-maker [SLR 4:130-31]. EDUCATION: Signed his deeds by mark.ESTATE: On 18 April 1646, "Edward Gould of Hingham" mortgaged to "John Stowe of Roxbury his house & three acres of land adjoining, with four acres of land in the neck & nineteen acres" [SLR 1:70].On 22 January 1648[/9?], there was "given by the town [of Hingham] to Edward Gold one acre of salt marsh at Conahasset it is the 10th lot on the southeast side of the river" [HiBOP 97r].On 28 July 1657, "Edward Gold hath granted to him four rods of ground" in Boston [BTR 1:138].On 20 April 1663, "Edward Gold of Hingham ..., pailmaker," sold to "Daniel Cushin of Hingham ... all that lot of land containing five acres be it more or less which I purchased of Henry Chamberlain lying and being in the township of Hingham aforesaid in the field called the Plain Neck" [SLR 4:130-31].BIRTH: About 1607 (aged 28 on 9 April 1635 [Hotten 54]).DEATH: Hingham 16 February 1684/5 [NEHGR 121:215].MARRIAGE: By 1643 Margaret (_____) Bacon, widow of GEORGE BACON {1635, Hingham} [GM 2:1:127-29]. She died at Hingham 6 or 7 February 1682/3 [HiVR 57; NEHGR 121:211].ASSOCIATIONS: Inasmuch as JARVIS GOULD {1635, Hingham} and Edward Gould sailed to New England on the same vessel, both settled first at Hingham, and both later resided at Boston, the likely assumption has been made that they were brothers, although no direct evidence of this relationship has been found.COMMENTS: Savage states that this immigrant was "of Hawkhurst, Co. Kent" [Savage 2:284], but the surviving parish register entries for that parish do not contain any entries for this surname in the late sixteenth or early seventeenth centuries. If the suggestion that Edward Gould and Jarvis Gould were brothers is correct, though, they were likely from that neighborhood in Kent, inasmuch as Jarvis Gould was listed as a servant of CLEMENT BATE {1635, Hingham}, who was from Biddenden, Kent.The list of daughters given above for this immigrant is highly problematic. The baptismal records at this time do not name the parents. There does not, however, seem to be any other Gould family in town at the time to which these girls could have belonged. Jarvis Gould appears to have had only sons, and Robert Gould seems to have been too young to be the father. Also, the baptisms of the last three all appear to have occurred when the girls were about eight to ten years old, an unusual circumstance.
