Houghton Genealogy, pp. 68,69, #34; pp. 33, 34 Sir Richard Hoghton, 1st Baronet of Hoghton Tower, so created 22 May 1611. He was knighted Jan 1589/90; he was Sherriff of Lancashire, 1599. Sir Richard entertained King James I on his return from Scotland at Hoghton Tower in 1617. During his stay, James liked his loin of beef so well that he took out his sword and "knighted" it, naming it SirLoin (sirloin), which is what it is called today. Entertaing the King and the 600-800 members of his company was so expensive that Richard was bankrupt after the visit, even though he got some rights to mining interests from the King as a result of the visit. Apparently entertaining a king or queen was so expensive that some nobles, upon hearing that they had been selected for a royal visit, would burn down part of their manor house as an excuse for not hosting the King, figuring aht it was cheaper to repair the house than to entertain the King and his company for a period. Note: Alternat birth dates, Aug 1570, and Sep 1570, were also recorded.
Note: Age 48 at death in 1617
