St. Catherine's House references, all born in Newcastle T.: Rose Amy, Apr-Jun 1875, 10b 75; Mary Jane, Jan-Mar 1879, 10b 111; Charlotte, Jan-Mar 1881, 10b 103. MARRIAGE: Registration District of Newcastle Upon Tyne at The Parish Church of St. Andrews. No 8. Married Feb 18th 1875, William Brown, age 25, Bachelor, Upholsterer, of Percy Street, son of William Brown who was also an Upholsterer; and Mary Jane Smithson, age 17, Spinster, of Percy Street, daughter of James Smithson who was a Tin-Smith. George Nevil and Jane Ann Pearson were the witnesses. (Perhaps Mary Jane's mother married again??) DEATH: St. Catherine's House ref, 10b 93, Jun 1908, William Brown, age 56 @ N/T. I don't have certificate but the age ties up and it's also before 1915 when he was noted as deceased on his son William's marriage certificate. OCCUPATION: Master Upholsterer SOURCES: 1. On 28th June 1858 at Russell's Court, Hanover Square, Mary Jane, girl, daughter of James Smithson, a Tin-Smith - journeyman, and Jane Ann Wealeans. Registered on 3rd August 1858. ARMY BOOKS: (All stolen from Douglas's house) 5ft 6inches tall. Fresh complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, mole on right breast, scar on left breast. Driller in army. Tram car conductor as civilian. Enlisted at Darlington, Durham on 13th April 1908 for the King's Liverpool Regiment for 7 years in the army and 5 years in the Reserve. Before military his trade was Labourer. Regimental Number was 10293. During the Great European War, 1915-18, served in Machine Gun Corps. Private W. Brown = No. 6325. Addresses of Mother, brothers and sisters were 30 Clifton Terrace, Whitley Bay and 16 South View, Heaton (?). Brother = Edward (Elder), Samuel (Younger). Sisters = Amy (Elder), Polly (Elder). In one red book it said "going to the front - on his marriage, 3rd May 1915. {He was married on the fourth} BIRTH: Cct - In the Sub-district of All Saints (Newcastle), No.156 (or 150). Born on 21st Jan 1886 at 3 Argyle Street. Son of William Brown, Master Upholsterer, and Mary Jane Smithson. Registered on 12 Feb 1886. MARRIAGE: Cct - In the registration district of All Saints in the parish of Christ Church, Newcastle in the presense of William Walker (brother-in-law) and Douglas Sloan(?). No. 363. William Brown, age 29, bachelor, Soldier, of 31 Simpson Street, son of William Brown (deceased) who was an Upholsterer; and Eveline Walker, age 25, Spinster, of 12 Stoddart Street (in Shieldfield, Newcastle), daughter of Richard Walker (deceased) who was a Collier. DEATH: Cct - Died of inoperable carcemima (cancer?) of the colon. Death reported by R. Lumley, cousin, of Redcliffe, 8 Cliftonville Avenue, Newcastle on 18th May 1937. No. 492. Died on 16th May 1937 at 418 Westgate Road, age 51 This death caused great distress to his son Ronald who lost his faith in God due to this 'being allowed to happen to such a good man'. R. Lumley's (if man or if not married) father is Mary Jane Smithson's or or William Brown's (father) brother-in-law. Could also be Eveline's blood cousin so may be William Lamb's son-in-law(?). FUNERAL: Different Papers - 1) John Bardgett & Sons Ltd (Funeral Furnishers and Motor Carriage Proprietors) of 351 Westgate Road billed Eveline Brown for the sum of 20 pounds and 10 shillings for the following :-Cremation Coffin, Motor Hearse, Saloon Cars, Press Notices, Attendance and Supervision, Disbursements, Underbearers, Doctor's Fees, Removal from General Hospital, Cremation Fees. 2) West Road Crematorium cremation fees (as just mentioned) for cremation fee, minister's fee, Tolling Bell and Medical Officer's Fee. No. 604. Cremated on 19th May 1937. No urn was purchased for the scattering of the ashes so I presume the crematorium disposed of them. Possibly died in Newcastle General Hospital as fees had to be paid for
