. Milton, Morgan, Utah Ward records shows Harold was baptized by Walter C. Neilsen, Confirmed by Joseph T Spendlove. Ordained a priest by Walter C. Nelson on 18 Feb 1918. On Dec 16, 1927 moved to Adamson Los Angeles Stake. He was employeed in many vocations during his lifetime. In his youth, he helped his widowed mother and older brothers on the farm. He loved to fish and do the things that youngsters who live in rural areas love to do. As a young man, he worked in the copper mines of Utah, and then headed West to make his fortune. He worked in the logging camps of Oregon and Northern California. He worked on crews building some of the first roads for logging trucks and automobiles in the same area. He worked for Downie Brothers in Los Angeles, at which he started as a shipping clerk during the depression. He became a top salesman, and traveled throughout Southern and Central California. In 1944, he purchased a small awning company and retained the name; Columbia Tent & Awning Company. He built this company from it's simple beginnings to a sizeable firm. His son, Gayne joined the firm in 1960, and his grandson Richard began his work career after returning from his mission and completing college in 1973. As of June, 1992, both of Harold's offspring are running the company, and it has grown from three employees to about thirty. During Harold's work career, he spent much of his time in the So. L.A. Chamber of Commerce, as the President, and was no slouch at Churchwork, either. As a Bishops' Counslor, High Priests group leader, and then he served some twenty years in the So. Los Angeles Stake Presidency, with 9 years as Stake President. When he was released in 1981 by President Ezra Taft Benson, he then served as Gospel Doctrine Teacher, High Priests group instructor, and enjoyed Home Teaching as well as any calling he ever held. He loved spectator sports, and rarely missed an opening Dodger's game while he had his health. In his eighty's, he could recite batting averages, team standings, and knew enough about the sporting world to challange his grandson, Richard, in frequent, friendly conversations. At his funeral, many shared their testimonies with his family members as to the inspirational help they received throughout their lives from their association with this great man. Son, Garry, lived 1 hour and 3 minutes. Daughter, Laurie lived 15-1/2 hours. Daughter Cheryl Kathleen legally adopted 25 Oct 1945 SOURCE INFORMATION WHITTIER FAMILY RECORDS IN POSSESSION OF Joyce A.
