He enlisted in the War between the States as a young boy, and served in many regiments until the end of the war. Returning from the war, he was active in helping rebuild his beloved Atlanta during the reconstruction. He was always a leader among Atlanta's Confederate veterans, being commander for many years of Camp W. H. T. Walker, of the U. C. V., and a regular attender at Confederate conventions. He went to work with the W. & A. R. R., attaining the post of Yardmaster. From 1908 to 1916 he was Sheriff of Fulton County, GA. He was a charter member of St. Paul's Methodist Church, a trustee, a steward, and a Sunday School Teacher.
