OBITUARY NOTICE, JAN 26 1934 EVAN R. OWEN DIES AT FAMILY HOME FROM HEART DISEASE FUNERAL SERVICES TO BE IN TABERNACLE (LOGAN) SUNDAY FINISH WAS WRITTEN TO THE FINAL CHAPTER OF THE EARTHLY LIFE OF ANOTHER OF CACHE VALLEY'S LEADING CIVIC AND BUSINESS LEADERS THURSDAY WHEN DEATH CLAIMED EVAN R. OWEN. MR. OWEN DIED AT HIS HOME, 127 EAST THIRD NORTH, AT 4:15 p.m. DEATH FOLLOWED OVER A YEAR OF ILL HEALTH, HEART FAILURE BEING THE IMMEDIATE CAUSE OF HIS LAST ILLNESS. HAD ACTIVE LIFE FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD SUNDAY AT 2 P.M. IN THE LOGAN TABERNACLE. INTERMANT WILL BE IN THE LOGAN CEMETERY. FRIENDS MAY CALL AT THE HOME SATURDAY AFTERNOON OR SUNDAY UNTIL TIME FOR THE SERVICES. BORN IN WELLSVILLE, JUNE 14, 1867, MR. OWEN'S ENTIRE LIFE WAS A STORY OF ACTIVE WORK IN PRIVATE BUSINESS AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS, BOTH GOVERNMENT AND EDUCATION. HE WAS THE SON OF EVAN AND ELIZABETH WALTER OWEN. SPENDING HIS EARLY CHILDHOOD IN WELLSVILLE, MR. OWEN CAME TO LOGAN TO ATTEND THE BRIGHAM YOUNG COLLEGE. HE GRADUATED FROM THAT PIONEER INSTITUTION IN 1887, BEING THE ONLY BOY IN A GROUP OF FOUR WHICH FORMED THE FIRST GRADUATING CLASS OF THE B. Y. C. CONTINUING HIS EDUCATION, MR. OWEN ATTENDED THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH IN SALT LAKE, THEN RETURNED TO WELLSVILLE WHERE HE TAUGHT SCHOOL FOR 14 YEARS. THEN HE TURNED HIS ATTENTION TO BUSINESS, SPENDING SERVERAL YEARS IN A MERCANTILE ESTABLISHMENT BEFORE COMING TO LOGAN IN 1914. IN LOGAN, HE WAS FIRST CONNECTED WITH THE TELLURIDE POWER COMPANY AND WHEN THIS CONCERN WAS ABSORBED BY THE UTAH POWER AND LIGHT COMPANY, JOINED THAT CONCERN, CONTINUING HIS UPWARD CLIMB UNTIL HE BECAME MANAGER OF THE LOGAN DIVISION WHICH INCLUDED MOST OF NORTHERN UTAH. HE RETIRED ABOUT FOUR YEARS AGO. HE WAS ELECTED A DIRECTOR OF THE THATCHER BROTHERS BANK IN 1916 AND SERVED UNTIL THAT INSTITUTION WAS MERGED WITH THE FIRST SECURITY BANK OF UTAH TWO MONTHS AGO. DURING HIS ACTIVE CAREER, MR. OWEN STILL FOUND SUFFICIENT TIME TO TAKE A PROMINENT PART IN POLITICS AND GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS AS WELL AS IN CHURCH ACTIVITIES. WHEN HE FIRST RETURNED TO WELLSVILLE, HE WAS ELECTED MAYOR, BECOMING AT 21 YEARS OF AGE, THE YOUNGEST MUNICIPAL EXECUTIVE IN THE STATE. HE WAS ALSO A MEMBER OF THE STATE LEGISLATURE, REPRESENTING CACHE COUNTY, AND WAS NOMINATED FOR SECRETARY OF STATE ON THE DEMOCRATIC TICKET ALTHOUGH NEVER REACHING THAT OFFICE. HE WAS ALSO A TRUSTEE AT THE UTAH STATE AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE, SERVING FOUR YEARS FROM 1903 TO 1907. SERVED AS PRESIDENT AFTER COMING TO LOGAN, HE WAS ALSO ACTIVE CIVICLY, BEING ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE LOGAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE IN 1916 AND SERVING UNTIL 1919. HE WAS A PROMINENT MEMBER OF THE ROTARY CLUB AND HEADED THAT ORGANIZATION AS PRESIDENT IN 1927. HE SERVED IN THE EMERGENCY WAR ORGANIZATION AS CACHE COUNTY AND LOGAN CITY FOOD ADMINISTRATOR. Mr. Owen's church activities included an L. D. S. mission to Great Britain from 1898-1900, part of which time he was president of the Welsh conference. Returning, he became bishop of the Wellsville ward which position he held for several years. In Logan he was an active member of the Fourth ward until ill health forced his retirement. As teacher of the adult class in the Fourth ward Sunday school, he established a reputation for modern and forceful thought which brought students to that class from all over Cache valley. Early in life, he married Lizzie Benson, the daughter of the late Apostle Ezra T. Benson and Elizabeth Benson. She, with the following children survives: Cyril B. Owen, St. Louis; Mrs. Alta Shaw, Brigham City; Mrs. Louella MacFarlane, Santa Monica; C. Leslie Owen, Los Angeles; Mrs. Lucille Clark, Ogden; Mrs. Grettle Hansen and Ezra and Fred Owen, Logan. Surviving also are 16 grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters: John Owen, Brigham City; Mrs. Mary O. Hill, Wells, Nevada; W. L.
