John Archer II [A.5.1] (1708-1773) resided at Archers Hall at Bermuda Hundred and was the most prominent of the early Archers. John was a vestryman of Henrico Parish, a justice of Henrico County (1737), militia colonel (1760 [Virginia's Colonial Soldiers (Bockstruck), page 343] ), the first sheriff (1749), and among the first justices of Chesterfield County when it was formed in 1748. John Archer was a trustee of the Town of Pocahontas that was established in 1752 and merged into Petersburg in 1784. [Hening's Statutes at Large, vol. 6, page 277] [Hening's Statutes at Large, vol. 11, page 382-7] As a trustee of the Town of Bermuda Hundred, he and other trustees conveyed a half-acre lot to Amy Worsham, widow of William Worsham, in June 1762 [Chesterfield County Deed Book 4, page 691] and eleven half-acre lots to Richard Eppes in February 1764. [Chesterfield County Deed Book 4, page 557]About 1733 John married Sarah Randolph (10 Oct. 1715 -1774), the daughter of Henry Randolph III and Elizabeth Epes. Johns paternal grandmother, Judith Soane, was the widow of Henry Randolph I.John Archers mother-in-law sued James Long in Amelia County and John Archer Gent. went 50 miles to the Amelia court house on 15 May 1741 as a witness for her. [Amelia County Court Order Book 1, page 156] During October 1749 John Archer bought Lot 6 at Bermuda Hundred from John Fitzgerald. [Chesterfield County Deed Book 1, page 57A] By November 1753 he was John Archer Sr. when he bought 120 acres in Chesterfield County from Henry Randolph of Amelia County. [Chesterfield County Deed Book 2, page 62] Archer had to indemnify Randolph by bond for this transaction 3 August 1764. [Chesterfield County Deed Book 4, page 611] In 1756 Chesterfield County listed John Archer with thirteen tithables including his son John Archer Jr. [''Chesterfield Tithables 1756,'' The Southside Virginian, vol. 2, page 22] In 1761 the elder John Archer conveyed to his son of the same name 120 acres in Chesterfield County. [Chesterfield County Deed Book 4, page 405]John left a will in Chesterfield County (will dated 15 Sept. 1773 [Chesterfield County Will Book 2, page 28] recorded 3 Dec. 1773 [Chesterfield County Court Order Book 5, page 378] ) and his wife a year later (will dated 29 Mar. 1774 [Chesterfield County Will Book 2, page 220] recorded 7 Oct. 1774 [Chesterfield County Court Order Book 6, page 59] ). Among the witnesses to Johns will was Mary Isham.
He married Sarah Randolph Abt 1732 at of Virginia . Sarah Randolph was born at Appomattox, Appomattox, Virginia 10 Oct 1715 daughter of Henry Randolph and Elizabeth Eppes .
