Breistein Bredsten Broadstone (A) Both Breistein and Bredsten translated to American means Broadstone (B) Anders Andersen Breistein was my father's father. His children generally spelled it (Bredsten) but no always. (Breistein) is the name of a farm that he (Anders Andersen) once owned. It is located a short distance north of Bergen, Norway. He added the (Breistein) to his name while he lived there. Before that time he only went by the name of Anders Andersen as near as I have been able to learn. My father told me that Andersen was such a common name that using the name of the fam too, helped identify them. This is the reason why they started using the name. (C) Some of my grandfather's children by his first wife, used both names (Andersen Bredsten). As near as I have been able to learn, those used both names were Andreas Andersen Bredsten, Mons Andersen Bredsten, Ole Andersen Bredsten and Sjur Andersen Bredsten. Martin and Lars only used the one name which is Martin Andersen and Lars Andersen. The above six sons were children by his first wife whose mained name was Oline Monsen. As far as I know and have been able to learn, I thik the children by his second and third wives just used the one name (Andersen) but I am not sure of this. (D) We came to the United States in October 1901. My father translated the name "Bredsten" to "Broadstone" sometime between the years 1901 and 1905 using both names "Andersen Broadstone." (E) There may be some in Norway named Briestein or some in the United States named Broadstone who may or may not be relatives. There are many who only have the "Andersen" name who are relatives About between the years 1835 to 1861. Written by Fritz Monrad Andersen Broadstone
