1.  According to the obituary in the Dyersville Commercial, Clemens was a carpenter by trade and emigrated to Cincinnati, Ohio when he was 30.  In 1873, Clemens and his family moved to Dubuque County, probably  Dyersville, Iowa where he began to farm.  Clemens first wife had died.  They had only one daughter, Nettie who married richard Schroeder.
