Notes:
Huip: a large farm in the northern end of the island of Stronsay.

I it said that the Craigies (Cragy) are descended from a family from Dalmeny in Linlothgow County, just west of Edinburgh. A number of Cragy names, notable and landed gentlemen, appear on documents during the 1300's.

James acquired much property and influence in Orkney, owning his land in Stronsay at the time of his marriage to Margaret Sinclair/St. Clair. By 1422 he had acquired sufficient estate and prestige to be admitted to the "hird" of the King of Norway, as a hirdman, or bodyguard of hand-picked, well-born warriors through which ranks lay the road to high position in the State. Eventually James was recognized as being an "Armiger," or one who was entitled to bear arms. He was a firm supporter of John of Colchester, Bishop of Orkney.
