Robert I de BEAUMONT, COUNT OF MEULAN
Robert de Beaumont, first earl of Leicester (1104-1168) justiciary of England, was the son of Robert de Beaumont, count of Meulan (d. 1118), the trusted counselor of Henry I. The Beaumonts were leading supporters of Stephen against the Empress Matilda and took an active part in the civil war, but on Stephen's defeat in 1141 they became reconciled to the Angevin Party. When Henry II landed in England in 1153, Robert supported his cause and was rewarded with the post of chief justiciar, which he held in the years 1155 and 1156. From 1158 to 1163 and again in 1165 he was left in charge of the kingdom during Henry's absence. He died in in 1168. His son Robert (d.1109) succeeded to the earldom and joined Prince Henry in the rebellion against his fater, Henry II, in 1173. He was imprisioned for one year (1173-1174) at Falaise and died in Greece in 1190 while returning from a pilgrimage to Palestine.
