During the Revolutionary War his parents' homes and goods were confiscated and burned by the British, and Capt Peter Hedrick took his wife and children to relatives in Virginia for safety until the war's end, at which time Franis was born.  They had approx. 11 children - some born in Rowan Co., North Carolina and some born in Virginia.
