FROM THE FILES OF NEIL HARKLEROAD - FROM "THAT DISGRACEFUL AFFAIR," THE BLACK HAWK WAR, THE SAUK COUNTERATTACK" - 'ON ONE OCCASION AT THE FORT AT APPLE VALLEY 12 MILES EAST OF GALENA, THE WHITES, FARMERS AND SOLDIERS, WERE BOTTLED UP IN THE STOCKADE WHILE BLACK HAWK AND HIS INDIANS WERE OUTSIDE. "...ONE MAN, HIDING IN AN EMPTY FLOUR BARREL, FOUND HIMSELF PULLED OUT AND SHOVED TO A LOOP HOLE BY MRS. ARMSTRONG. SHE WAS SO SUCCESSFUL IN INVIGORATING THE DEFENCE THAT A YOUTH HARKELRODE STUCK HIS HEAD OVER THE PALISADE FOR A CLEARER VIEW (OR PERHAPS TO TAUNT THE ATTACKERS) AND WAS KILLED BY A BALL THROUGH HIS NECK. HE WAS THE SOLE FATALITY ON EITHER SIDE DURING THE SEIGE THAT LASTED ANYWHERE FROM THREE QUARTERS OF AN HOUR TO THREE HOURS' DEPENDING UPON WHO TELLS THE STORY. BLACK HAWK HIMSELF RECALLED THIS HYPERACTIVE YOUTH VIVIDLY; ' ONE OF THEIR BRAVES, WHO SEEMED MORE VALIENT THAN THE REST, RAISED HIS HEAD ABOVE THE PICKETING TO FIRE AT US, WHEN ONE OF MY BRAVES, WITH A WELL DIRECTED SHOT, PUT AN END TO HIS BRAVERY' POOR GEORGE HARKLEROAD DIED JUNE 24, 1832 AFTER LESS THAN 30 DAYS IN THE 'ARMY'."
