Edward I King of ENGLAND, THE ELDER
Edward (The Elder) (c.870-924), king of the Angles and Saxons, was the son of Alfred the Great. He succeeeded his father on the throne in 899, after having shown himself to be an able defender against the Danes. On his accession Edward continued his wars with the Danish invaders, some of whom were supported by his cousin Ehelwold, who desired the throne. After making peace with the East Anglian Danes in 905 and triumphing over the Danish occupants of Staffordshire in 909 & 910. Edward took over the Mercian lands of Misslesex and Oxfordshire from his sister Ethefleda, and steadily annexed territory in eastern England until he achieved the complete submission of the East Anglian Danes. On Ethelfreda's death, Mercia come under Edward's rule, and finally in 919 or 921, he received the homage of the Scottish King, the Norwegian King of Northumbria, the Northumbrian inhabitants, and the Strath- clyde Welsh. Edward made a great contibution towards the unification of England, which his sone Ethelstan, continued. Edward the Elder died in 924 and was buried at Winchester.
