King of England, Illegitimate son of Robert, Duke of Normandy, was born at Falaise, France, in 1027 or 28. When Robert died in 1035, William succeeded him as duke, but the regents who rulled for him were faced with rebellious nobles, and the next 12 yearss was a period of feudal anarch; it was William's own vigorous action that in 1047 crushed a wide-spread rebellion and established his authority ona firm basis. In doing this, he had received substantial help from his overlord Henry 1, King of France. In 1051 he visited his cousin, Edward the Confessor, King of England, and it was probably on this visit the he obtained Edwards's promise that he would succeed the throne. William's marriage to Miltilda of Flanders alarmed the King of France, who did not want to see Normandy and Flanders in alliance. A series of wars and invasions of Normandy followed through the French King was usually in alliance with the Count of Anjou or with som rebi;ous Norman nobles. William was uniformly successful, winning a decided victory in 1058. In 1063 he added by conquest, County of Main.
William tried further to advance his claim to the English throne in 1064, when he obtained from Harold, Earl of Wessex, brother-in-law, his promise to support William's condidancy. When Edward died in 1066 and Harold accepted the crown for himself, William was enraged and dedided on an immediate invasion. He secured support of his barons, and Pope Alexander II sent his blessing. An aliance was made with Harold's banised brother Tosting, who invaded the North of England. Harold's attention was thus distracted. On Sept. 28, 1066 William lande at Pevensey in Sussex with an army of men and on October 14th he defeated and killed Harold.William entered London and was crowned on December 25, 1066. After the conquest of the north had been conoleted by 1070, william treated the English sternly but fairly. The Church under Archbishop, Lanfranc was centralized and linked with the reform movement. In 1085 William ordered the compilitation of the famous survey called the Domesday Book. His last years were troubled by revewed wars in Normandy and he died at Rouen on Sept 9, 1087 as the result of being thrown from his horse while riding through the flaming ruins of Mantes. In character he was pious, temperate, and ruthless, but rather as a matter of policy than of inclination. A brave fighter, a good general, a superior administrator, he gave England a reasonably well-ordered and peaceful government. by E. R. Adair Matilda, queen of England is a decendent of of Ethelred II
William II (1056-1100) called Rufus from his ruddy complexion. King of Eng- land, 3rd son of Wm. the Conquerer & Matilda of Flanders, was born between 1056-1060. On his deathbed William I nominated his favorite son, William, to Archbishop Lanfranc as his successor to the English Throne. William was crowned king on Sep. 26, 1087. This separation of Eng. from Normandy imposed a divided allegiance on the barons, most of whom had land on both sides of the channel. At Easter the following year a rebellion broke out led by Earl of Kent. Wm. next turned his attention to recovery of Normandy, in 1091 invading his elder brother's land and soon forcing him to sue for peace. The two brothers then turned against Henry, the youngest surviving son of the Conquerer. who had purchased the Cotentin Penninsula from his brother Robert. The follow- ing year he left Normandy & marched north against Malcolm III of Scotland, who had invaded England. He later seized Carlisle, & Westmorland. In 1094 he invaded Normandy but received only Maine. At home there was a quarrel with the church. On death of Lanfranc in 1089 he appointed Ranulf Flambard Treasurer, who was highly skilled in raising money. William was accidentally killed perhaps by Walter Tirel, while hunting in the New Forest on August 2, 1100.

Henry I (1068-1135), King of England, youngest son of William the Conqueror, was born at Selby, Yorkshire. His education was considered so excellent that he was nicknamed Beauclerc. He received L, 5,000 at his father's death, but no lands, and was kept in a position of inferiority by his elder brothers, Robert of Normandy & Wm. Rufus of England. On the latter's death, in 1100, Robert being absent, Henry seized the Royal treasury, and the nobles chose him as King. He at once issued a charter of liberties of great improtantce, conciliating his English subjects in order to gain thier support in his struggles with Norman nobles, whose powere he steadily opposed. This charter served as basis for Manga Carta. In 1106 he defeated Robert in France, captured and imprisioned and took possession of Normandy. Robert reained in prizon until he died in 1134. In England, Henry ruled well, though sternly; it was characteristic of his love of money that the Royal Eschequer was organ- ized. In 1100 he married the Anglo Scottish Princess Edith, renamed Matilda, but he had many mistresses & illegitimate children. Matilda died in 1118, & 3 yrs. later he married Adelaide.
