Samuel COURTNEY
Blacksmtih in 1900 census and 1880 census. His biography says he worked at the Santa Fe car shops. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church. He fell breaking his hip and died two years later on March 7, 1955 (probably meant 1935) 1955 would have made him 94 at death (a little old for that time) and the other information I have from Jean Suman shows 1935. Another obituary also says he was 74 years old when he died making 1935 correct. BIOGRAPHY: same as Sam Courtney married to Jessie or was Jessie same as Luella "Ella" Dressler because obtituary of Frederick Dressler from the Little River Monitor, vol32 #19 dated oct 11, 1917 says that he only had nine children 5 boys and 4 girls. (I had 5 girls listed with SAm Courtney as spouse to 2 of them???
(Could be spelled)Luella "Ella" Dressler. Could have been born in Michigan according to 1900 census. She was only ill about 10 days before she died. The funeral was held in the family home. This was Jean Suman's grandmother.(My great grandfather..Schuyler Colfax Dressler's sister.)
Obiturary: Ottawa Herald nov 6, 1918: ...Mrs. Johns (Jessie) age 31? died suddenly last Friday night at her home in Tacoma aftger an illness of only five days, from leakage of the heart caused by the influenza flu epidemic of 1918.

comments under Luella Dressler by Jean Suman say that Luella had 8 children, 5 of whom lived to adulthood. Naomi was Jean's mother. Luella "ELLA" contacted typhoid fever and died within two weeks about 2 months before her 42nd birthday. the obituary said that rapid complications of dieseases set in which caused her death. The pastor paid a beautiful tribute to the significance of Christian motherhood.
Jean Suman's Mother. Her biography says that her father remarried when she was 12 years old. Her stepmother did not treat her well. She left home early, moved in with her last brother Dewey and his wife, Pearl. She never told her father about her treatment by her stepmother, and always gave her credit for being a good second wife to her father. her mother was very good at sewing, did beautiful handwork and made covers for altars of churches. Naomi inherited this talent from her mother. She got a job as a waitress and made her own uniform, without instruction by hand. After doing such a good job, all of the other girls had her make theirs. She met Walter Dickson, whom she called Dick. After a short courtship they went to Covington, Ky and got married. They had one daughter, Roella Jean. They traveled extensively with the Western Electric until the depression, when the Western laid off their employees. They took their saving of $1000 and paid cash fro a three-room home without running water in Merriam, KS. Dick always managed to find work even though sometimes he could not afford to drive home except on weekends ot save on gas....Naomi was so talented and such a good seamstress that she taught sewing classes for Singer Sewing compancy where Dick was a salesman. She would go to a Shirley TEmple movie, come home, and without a pattern, make all of the different dresses she had seen for Jean. She then displayhed them in the window at Singer, before they came out in the stores.....After Dick retired they bought a place on the Lake in Lincoln, MO. They lived there for many years. They were happily married for 60 years before Naomi died at age 80.
