William ROE
BIRTH: Shown as William ROE Sergeant? Was surname Roe or Sergeant or was he a Sergeant in the military? (See biography) born at Hempstead or Oyster Bay, Long Island, NY. BIOGRAPHY: William Roe was a cordwainer (Shoemaker) According to Book: "David Roe of Flushing, New York and Some of his decendants" (2nd Edition) published 1926 Microfiche G5456: In the early part of the Revolution he was a sergeant in Captain Richard Manee's company of Colonel Josiah Smith's regiment of Queens County militia. He remained at home, however, after the British defeated Washington's forces on Long Island. "Furnishing secret intelligence to the American cause in the Fall of 1777 and after, until he was informed against and then had to flee to the Mainland to escape British vengeance. He returned in May 1782, under a flag of truce to remove his family to the vicinity of Stamford, Conn. He was captured Dec 11 1782, with others, by Hessians and probably remained a prisoner until the close of the war. He rendered substantial service to the American cause during the Revolution. He was informed against and was obligated to flee for his life to Stamfrod, Connecticut. In 1782 he was taken prisoner but was afterward released. About 1789 he became an auctioneer. William Roe and his family were members of the Baptist Church.
BIRTH: Sometimes spelled Feke. See information under her father's biography. BIOGRAPHY: She was probably a member of the Baptist Church when she was married. Hannah Feake, sister of Mary's great-grandfather, had married John Browne of Flushing, a pioneer in the cause of religious freedom. Her ancestors had been members of the Society of Friends but her grandfather had been converted to the Baptist faith and had served afterward as a lay preacher at Oyster Bay. She was probably a member of the Baptist Church when she was married.
BIOGRAPHY: Like his father and grandfather, he was a farmer and shoemaker. HIs Grandson, Charles B. Roe, described him as about 5 ft 9 or 10 inches tall and weighing about 150 lbs. His hair was black.IN accordance with the customs of the time he wore knee breeches. He was quick and active in his movements and a great worker. In one day he made thirty sugar troughs and a pair of shoes and attended a barn raising in the afternoon. In 1806 Charles Roe is mentioned as one of the leading men in the Baptist Society of Dayton. DEATH: His son, William, was appointed administrator of the estate and lived on the parental farm. Charles died 5 days after his wife Barsheba died 18 Aug 1838. BURIAL: Charles and Barsheba are buried on their farm about 5 miles north of South Bend.
