Main Archive Record NOTES: When Germany was made up of a group of German States, one of them was Hess. He was born in 1756 in this state. He got tired of being Royalty and left home and joined the Hessian Army. When the Revolutionary War broke out, John got his brother to join him and they came to America when King George sent the Hessian Army here to fight for England. When they got here and saw the situation they decided the Colonies were in the right, so they deserted Burgoyne's forces and joined George Washington's. When the war ended they couldn't return to Germany because they would be picked up for being deserters. They went out to western New York, and a family by the name of Burgess took them in and so they took the name of Burgess.
