Martha Susan Phillips was born Aug 23, 1878 in Johnson Co, MO. Dec 2, 1896 she was married to Ulysses Calvin Carlyle. Two years after their marriage they moved to WA, residing at Pomeroy, Garfield Co, WA for six years, then Yakima, Adams and Spokane counties. In the fall of 1911 they removed to their present home 12 miles south of Davenport where on Feb 9, 1916 her death occurred. She leaves behind her husband and 4 children including an infant boy four days old, her father J. M. Phillips of Pomeroy, one brother, J. W. Phillips of Bluestem, and one sister, Mrs. G. S. Patterson of Wallace, Idaho. The funeral was held at the Pleasant Valley school house and the temporary burial took place in the Neighborhood cemetery (Pleasant Valley). (Dav. Tribune-17 Feb 1916)

                   Wagner, Alma Dean Carlyle, (added) Alma Dean Carlyle Wagner, a former resident of Marlin, died in Kennewick on Friday, Jan 17, 2003. She was 91 years old. She was born Jan 5, 1912, at Bluestem, the daughter of Ulysses Calvin and Susan Phillips Carlyle. She was graduated from Davenport High School in 1929 and Cheney Normal School (Eastern Washington University) in 1931. Alma taught for two years at the Kallenberger rural school northeast of Marlin and one year at Juanita, in the Yakima Valley, prior to her marriage to Harvey V. Wagner, of Marlin, on May 31, 1934. Until she and Harvey retired in 1975, they lived most of the time in the Marlin area, where they raised their family. They retired, living in Neilton, WA, for 15 years prior to moving to Kennewick in 1991. Alma was a member of the Odessa chapter of Eastern Star, the Cannawai Ladies Club, Marlin Presbyterian Ladies Aid, Marlin PTA and the Kennewick First Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, music and reading. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, one granddaughter, Sharon Nancy Bodeau, and an infant grandson. She is survived by two daughters, Nancy G Fiess, and Sharon A Sump, both of Richland, and a son, Larry D. Wagner, of Fountain Valley, CA. Also surviving are two grandsons, L. Keith Bodeau and Edward N. Hoff, and 5 granddaughters, Joanne M. Mizell, Patricia M. Costahaude, Heidi L. Moncrief, Elizabeth M. Oestreich and Karin L. Wagner. In addition, she had six great-grandsons and five great-granddaughters. There will be a viewing from 9 to 10:30 a.m. today, Jan 23, at the Odessa Cemetery Chapel followed by the burial service at 11 a.m. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Jan 23, at the First Presbyterian Church, 2000 W Kennewick Avenue in Kennewick.
