    3.   Dudley Ford's  father died when he was 5 years old.  There were five children in his family, Dudley was the third son.  At age 18, he began to be a Framer ,  in 1864, in General Forrest's Command, he enlisted in the Confederate Army.
   He fought in several important places. 9 July 1864, in a skirmish, he was wounded by a musket ball, and spent 2 months in Hospital in  Jackson County.  About 1 September, he was well enough to serve in the army again. His command went to western Kentucky, then to West TN and spent  most of the winter there.  He was captured and held about one month and then taken to Macon, GA. There he was paroled. After being paroled, he went to Chattanooga, TN  - because he refused to take the oath of the Federal Government. In Nashville, TN, "he finally took the oath" - There, he was confined in  jail for three days, and went home and back to farming for 3 years.
He then  went to school for 2 years and Mt. Etna, Pleasant Valley, Ohio County, and  Dudley Hall in Davies County. In 1870, he began teaching school at Taylor and  Halbrook's schoolhouse, Ohio County. In 1872, he went into the mercantile and  tobacco business at Buford, Ohio, KY. (Marion Jewell Nicholls' father, Argel "E" Jewell, was born in Buford, KY.) He continued there until May 1895. He sold out and in October, opened his mercantile house at Pleasant Ridge, Davies County.
   In 1878, he purchased his tobacco factory. He belonged to the Baptist  Church   -  also   belonged to Joe Ellis Lodge - No.473 A.F. & A.M.
