BIRTH: 6 Jan 1648/1649 (Mary, Child #4) NOTE: Had children by each marriage - 10 sons 8 daughters-5 or 6 of them died before reaching maturity. Several married and lived in Exeter, RI. (Breeding Fine Cattle). Grandsons - Samuel and John Dudley were Quakers. In May 1650, he became a reverend in Exeter, RI. NOTES FROM BACK: First settled in Newton (Cambridge) - living in what is now Dunster Street. He soon removed to Ipswich. In 1638 - went to help settle Salisbury and remained there about 12 yrs. He wife died there and he md 2nd wife - Mary Byley - of Salisbury. In Salisbury he was: 1. Representative from Salisbury to General Court - (1641-1645) 2. Chairman of - Board of Selectmen - for several years. 3. March 1648 - appointed as ssociate Judge to hold court from year to year in Salisbury. 4. Was made Commissioner to settle boundaries of towns, etc. - in great dispute. He has been: Farmer, a Magistrate and owned over 200 acres of land. Has acted as Lieutenant in a military company. While in Cambridge - 13 May 1650 - he agreed to be Minister for people of Exeter, NH. (They paid him forty pounds and gave him a house and use of land). In 1652 - He and John Legat were permitted to erect a sawmill and have timber for the mill - on the Commons. In 1665 - He asked to have his salary lowered and declined a call to Portsmouth - at double salary. He was sent - as agent to general court at Boston - before any deputy was elected. He was often engaged in the public business. He was a large landowner and was much interested in agricultural, as well as spiritual and intellectual affairs. SOURCES: 1.
