NOTES: 1. As a child William moved to Illinois, then followed his father
            along the Oregon Trail to Lane County, Oregon. In Lane County,
            he became the first postmaster, the first school teacher, and a
            member of State Senate fro several years.--He opposed capital
            Punishment, imprisonment for debt and segregated schools.  He
            was a hard money man. -- He worked for the establishment of public
            education and of a State University. He was mild, but eloquent.
