John Bidwell cleared up a swamp of poison alders on the south side of his house and set fire to them with the wind from the north. After the fire got started the wind shifted to the south, he ran to his house shut it as close as he could, but the smell of slders posioned him so that he died about 24 hours after and his wife was so affected by the poison that she was a cripple the rest of her life. 2. On 26 August 1750, John became Guardian of Stephen Bidwell (son of Zebulon and Mary Gilman Bidwell) Stephen was 20 years old at the time and very close to his Uncle.

Captain Zebulon Daniel Bidwell, Captain in Colonal Cook's regiment in the Revolutionary War, serving in VA at surrender of Cornwallis and in Ny where he was killed at the Battle of Saratoga - near Stillwater, Saratoga, NY. 2. Wife Mary Burnham Bidwell was out visiting and staying until evening, a boy was sent to help her home, he went on ahead. Ther was no railing on the bridge that went across the creek. She walked off and was drowned. Footprints in light snow found her body after midnight 3. Son William Bidwell (stillborn) his headstone reads - Perhaps quited life at news - father killed.
