Book #974.6 Root-Patriots Daughters pp. 346-351 NOTES: Married for 56 yrs; had 7 children, 15 grandchildren, 17 great grand- children; Wife joined this Patriots Daughters-Wadsworth Chapter on 4 Nov 1897 (age 99). She lived in lifetime of every president of the country. Clear memory back totime of John Adams. She went to school at Bacon Academy. Spent her 56 yrs of marriage on the old homestead (which had been down in famimly for 200 yrs). In 1876, celebrated Golden Wedding anniversary; after husb's death, lived with her daughter, Mrs. Philo Bevin. At her death lacked 20 days of age 101 yrs. She was a member of Congregational Church at Westchester, CT from age 26; For 74 yrs her life was lived in full accord with the vows she then made. She had a retentive mind& an excellent memory. It was a custom in those days to memorize selections from English Poets. When she was age 100, she could repeat many of those poems withperfect memory. The Bible was her constant companion and was read at least oncea year. Her motto for life was "Always Rejoicing". She was born before the dayof stoves and when a fireplace was only way to heat the house. (Before steam &electricity were dreamed of). Men rode horseback with the women on pillions behind them. (Dictionary says-a cushioned pad put behind the saddle on a horse as aseat for a second person). She lived before factories existed-maidens wove theirown wool and flax on hand looms. Her children have woolen & linen made by Mrs.Loomis (She was only age 16) & her mother. #69 Wadsworth Chapter #21371-Nationalnumber for Abigail (Foote) Loomis Several of her brothers & sisters lived to "agood old age", but she alone reached century mark. In November 1897, she sat down to her 100th Thanksgiving dinner (age 99 yrs & 5 mo.), using at the table a gold spoon-the gift of National Society. The next year, she was 100 yrs old & received a gift of 100 roses from Wadsworth Chapter, as well as visits & congratulations from many friends. 6 Jun 1899, she gently passed from earth"-just faded into immortality-a glad & joyous going home."
