AdamsJames Adams (LS)Stephentown Historical Society:The 1800 Federal Census for New York, Rensselaer County, James Adams, Jr. was living in Stephentown, with 3 children under the age of 10, a boy, 10-16, and two girls, ages 16-26, beside himself and his wife.James Adams served with the Connecticut troops as a private under Colonel William Ledyard in the Revolutionary War. His service was prior to that time when Fort Griswold was stormed and Col. Ledyard killed. There are several members of the Adams who have joined the DAR on his war service. Many, many years later, in Illinois, his son Israel stated that his father had been a privateer at sea during the war. James made application for a pension on 5 Sept. 1832 at Stephentown, stated that in 1778 he was a substitute in the place of Joseph Brown of Groton under Capt. William Latham with Col. William Ledyard's regiment, and served 8 months, stationed at Fort Griswold during his service; that in 1779 he served one month under Capt. William Morgan, at New London, Connecticut. A disposition, written by Joshua Bill of Preston, formerly of Groton, on 6 August 1841, stated that James Adams had resided about 3 miles north of the Fort on the Preston Road, later moving to Stephentown, New York. A pension of 30 dollars per annum was granted. In the Hundred and Fifty-Fifth Regiment of Rensselaer County Militia, James Adams was named as Captain, 5 April 1805. James and his family had probably left Groton prior to the sacking of Fort Griswold and the burning of the town. His uncle, Nathaniel Adams, died in that battle 6 September 1781. A monument was erected in 1854 to remember that day: "It commemorates the Burning of New London: the Storming of Groton Fort, the Massacre of the Garrison, the Slaughter of Ledyard, the brave Commander of these posts, who was slain by the Conquerors with his own sword." The names of those who died that day are inscribed in the monument.Stephentown was the principal village in Rensselaer County. In fact, when the 1790 Census was taken, Stephentown was still part of then Albany, County. The population then was 3652 males, 3362 females, 23 slaves, being only 100 less population than the largest town of Rensselaerwych (?). The town of Albany had only about half the population of Stephentown. In 1799, the Post w
ritter announced he would make Stephentown one of his stops. The Presbyterian Church was organized on the Flats, (About 1 mile west of Stephentown Village) in 1793, but it was the Baptist Cemetery, on the hill back of Stephentown Village, which contained many of the very first settlers. Considerable manufacturing was situated at Stephentown Flats, being on Kinderhook Creek. A "select school" was begun at the Flats by 1830, a building erected for the purpose. This was apparently the area where the Adams family lived. The 1790 census shows 2 males over 16, 4 under 16 and 2 females. In the 1800 census, living in his home: males; one person under 10, one person 10-16, no persons 17-26, one person 27-45, no persons over 45. Females; two under 10, none 10-16, two 17-26, one 27-45 and none over 45.The 1810 census shows: males; three persons under 10, no persons 10-16, one person 17-26, no persons 27-45, one person over 45. Females; one under 10, one 10-16, none 17-26, one 27-45 and none over 45.Stephentown Historical Society:"At one time, the Adams and Sheldons were all buried in the Adams' Cemetery on Southard Road. When James Henry Carpenter bought the property and found a cemetery in the center of the 35 acre hay meadow (the Sheldon stones had been removed by that time), he took the Adams stones and put them in the bordering woods and proceeded to plow up the field, permanently obliterating the remains and even the site is now in doubt. It was somewhere in the center of the field. We received permission from direct decendants of the Adams, Betty Rowland and Mary Dehlen, both of Seattle, Washington on 22 June, 1982, to remove the gravestones to save, preserve and care for them in the future.
