Notes:
Nicknamed "Thede". He was born and grew up on a farm north of Hartville. After
marriage he operated a drug store in Manes. He moved his family to Hartville in
1905 and opened a luncheon and meat market. His daughter Essie wrote of her
father: "He was affectionate, fun-loving, proud, like to dress, and wore a
black derby. Daddy never had studied music, but played fiddle by ear and bass
horn in the town band. All of us were taught to sing and dance (jig) and we had
frequent dancing parties in our home." In 1908 he moved his family to Lujane,
Montrose Co., Colorado to work on the Gunnison Tunnel project. After completion
he farmed in Delta County. About 1911 he and his brother "mike" and son-in-law,
David Hill bought a summer resort in Almont when proved to be an unprofitable
venture, as well as his later venture of buying a hotel in Ridgeway. In 1913 he
filed on 160 acres to homestead near Olathe, Montrose County, where he farmed
until after WWI. Farm prices dropped and he lost the property, even the house
he had built. In 1924 he moved his family to Palisade where he started a coal
dealership, buying from nearby mines and selling throughout the area. In 1926
he bought 10 acres west of Palisade at the foot of Mt. Garfield, and it was
here he and Cindy spent the remainder of their lives.
