David helped those suffering from smallpox which broke out among the "Welcome" passengers in mid Atlantic. "He signed the nuncupative will of Thomas Herriott, from Sussex, England, declared 7 month,19, 1682, on board the "Welcome". Isaac Ingram, of Gatton, Surrey, left &2 to David Ogden in his will dated 7 month, 26, 1682 (O.S.). Being an unmarried man, his possession of a mirror and a toy glass hat is best explained by the supposition that suffering passengers whom he befriended gave them to him in affectionate regard for his services. These two relics have been carefully handed down from generation to generation as precious heirlooms.""The "Welcome" having arrived at New Castle on 10 mo. 27(O.S.), on the following day Penn produced deeds from the Duke of York, and took possession of the town and country, signified by "the delivery of turf, and twig, and water, and soyle of the river Delaware." Penn was joy fully welcomed by the inhabitants, whom he addressed in the court-house. He explained to them and the magistrates the nature of the government he came to establish. On the 29th he was at Upland (Chester). The supposed spot is marked by a memorial stone erected by the PA Historical Society. The passengers of the "Welcome," upon landing repaired to the house of Robert Wade, and held a religious meeting, to give thanks to God for their safe deliverance from sickness, death, the perils of the deep, and the persecutions of their native land." (Wade died much lamented in 1698.) "Tradition states that from Chester Penn and his immediate friends proceded in an open boat or barge to the site of the infant city of Philadelphia. They landed at the public landing place on Dock Creek, opposite the "Blue Anchor Tavern," "On the shore were gathered the few inhabitants that had preceded him from England, together with the Swedes and other older settlers and numerous Indians, representing various tribes from the adjacent country. At this time there were probably 3500 white people in the province and territories, and on the eastern bank of the Delaware from Salem to Trenton. A few wigwams and not over twenty houses were to be found within the entire limits of what is now Philadelphia Co ." The Indians called themselves "Lenni Lenapes," meaning "Orginal People".The definitive account of David Ogden's History is detailed in the book "The Quaker Ogdens in America, David Ogden of ye goode ship "Welcome" and His Descendants 1682-1897, Their History, Biography, and Geneology" by Charles Burr Ogden, published 1898, J.B. Lippincott, Philadelphia. Copies of applicable pages are in a separate document file. The book should be readily available in libraries with substantial U.S. Quaker collections.
