   Quote from a newspaper Clipping from Windham, Conn. titled: Two Hundred Years Old.  Windham Town's Birthday Celebration.
       "Since the date of the town's incorporation, its territory has been somewhat decreased, first in 1702, by the incorporation of the town of Mansfield, and again in 1780 when another corner was cut off to make the town of Hampton of sufficient size; Pomfret, Brooklyn, Canterbury and Mansfield being drawn upon for the balance.  The town of Chaplin, which was organized in 1822, had already been cut out of the original territory of Windham by the formation of Mansfield and Hampton, from which it was taken. The last time the legislative scissors were used on Windham was when the town of Scotland was given a corporate existence in 1857."

       The area known as Windham besides having many towns incorporate and become separate townships has also known county changes.  At first they were in New London County then finally Windham County.  Mansfield being first in Windham County, now included in Tolland County.
