                      Commemorative Biographical Record of Connecticut:
       The Bowens of Woodstock, Pomfret, Thompson and Killingly are descendants of (1) Griffith Bowen, of Boston, who came from Slade, on the Gower, Glamorganshhire, Wales.  Mr. Bowen and his family must have returned to England soon after 1649, as nothing is known of him in New England after that years.  His wife was Mary, daughter of Henry Flemming, and their children were:
       Margaret
       Francis
       William
       Mary
       Henry
       Elizabeth
       Esther
       Abigail
       Peniel
all of whom were born in Wales.
       William came to Boston, became a sailor, and died in captivity among the Turks, leaving a son, William, who lived in Boston, and his wife was named Mary.  Henry remained in New England, and Peniel returned to Great Britain with his parents.
       (11) Henry Bowen, son of Griffith, born about 1634, married Dec 20, 1658, Elizabeth, a daughter of Captain Isaac and Elizabeth (Porter) Johnson, of Roxbury, Massachusetts.  After 1677 they removed to Roxbury.  His wife died Aug 13, 1683, and the following year he married Susanna, widow of Peleg Health, of Roxbury.  Mr. Bowen filled several town offices.  He or his son, Henry, was one of thirteen men who left Roxbury about Apri l1, 1686, to spy out New Roxbury, now Woodstock, Connect6icut.  Henry Bowen, Sr., died in Woodstock, March 13, 1724 in his ninetieth year.  His children - born to his first wife were:

        Henry Bowen went to Woodstock,Windham Connecticut in 1684 as one of the original "planters".  Later took his family to the area that was first called New Roxbury later named Woodstock.  When he first went he was said to be in his advanced years with grown sons and leaving a large estate in Roxbury.  Roxbury, Massachusetts a thriving community in 1684 was in the 1800's incorporated into the city of Boston.
