Henry BOWEN

        Henry Bowen went to Woodstock,Windham Connecticut in 1684 as one of the original "planters".  Later took his family to the area that was first called New Roxbury later named Woodstock.  When he first went he was said to be in his advanced years with grown sons and leaving a large estate in Roxbury.  Roxbury, Massachusetts a thriving community in 1684 was in the 1800's incorporated into the city of Boston.

   Commemorative Biographical Record of Tolland and Windham Counties p777:
       Henry Bowen, son of Griffith, born about 1634 in Wales, married Dec 20, 1658, Elizabeth, a daughter of Captain Isaac and Elizabeth (Porter) Johnson, of Roxbury, Mass.  After 1677 they removed to Roxbury.  His wife died Aug 13, 1683, and the following year he married Susanna, widow of Peleg Heath of Roxbury.  Mr. Bowen filled several town offices.  He or his son, Henry, was one of thirteen men who left Roxbury about April 1, 11686, to spy out New Roxbury, now Woodstock, Conn.  Henry Bowen, Sr., died in Woodstock, March 13, 1723-24 in his ninetieth years.  His children, all of whom were born to the first marriage, were:  Henry, of whom all trace has been lost; Elizabeth; John, born in 1662, who went in 1686 to Woodstock, but came back to Roxbury, where he married Hannah, a daughter of Daniel Brown; an unnamed infant; Margaret; Marie; Margaret (2); Abigail; Peniel, born March 8, 1671; Hester; and Isaac, born April 20, 1676 in Roxbury.
