"The first settlers were from Litchfield county, Connecticut, and
several
families came from one town-Colebrook. ------The settlement began in
1805. In
June of that year arrived Luke Viets and his wife, David Viets,
Luke's father,"
Benjamin may have arrived latter but he is spoken of on the same
page "Benjamin
Viets settled in the eastern part of the township, south of the
center road. His
children were Sally and Maria." Page 526 same Vol.
"Luke Viets built a small tannery on his farm in early times and
operated it a
number of years.
'The first manufactory or mill of any kind was a turning shop
erected by
Benjamin Viets about 1815 in the eastern part of the township. It
stood about
one-half mile south of the center road, and was run by the water of
a small
stream. Here he made trenchers or wooden plates, wooden bowls,
mortars, and
other articles for the use of the settlers."
Benjamin left this part of Ohio and is found in Athens County
buying land
from a Benjamin Miles on 26th day of November 1831, Vol. 6 page 497
at the
Athens County court house. This explains how Maria Viets and Albert
Miles got
togeather and later moved up north to Geauga County, Ohio where they
owned some
land. This is close to Hiram, Ohio where the Johnson farm is
located. The
Prophet Joseph Smith lived with the Johnsons which made it posible
for Albert
and his family to hear and except the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-Day
Saints. This brought Albert and family west to Utah.
