Robert HARRIS, (MAJOR)
From "Finding Your Forefathers in America" pg 74 and History of Louisa Co. pg 348. Robert Harris came to va. 1650 The first record we have of this family is that Capt. Thomas Harris and Thomas Osborn settled in Virginia in 1611 on lands that are now located in Henrico County. Captain Harris in the long Indian Wars of 1622 was second in command to Thomas Osborne. He was member of the House of Burgesses in 1623, 1637, 1647. He married Adria Osborne, and from this marriage descended Maj. Robert Harris of "The Forks" who married a widow, Mrs Mary (Claiborne) Rice, youngest daughter of Col William Claiborne, the first Secretary of the Virginia Colony. Their son William Harris married Temperance Overton, daughter of William Overton, the immigrant, and his wife, Mary Waters; this William Overton was the son of Colonel Overton, Governor of Hull, England, under Oliver Cromwell and later commanded a brigade at Dunbar and Inver Keithing. Mary Claiborne, daughter of Secretary Claiborne married first Edward or Edmund Rice ,second Robert Harris in 1660 "Old Virginia and Her Neighbors" by John Fiske. William Crosse of Botetourt Col. Va. and His Descendants (B15A90) p. 155 Son. Thomas married to Mary Giles was killed by Indians 1725 Robert Harris married to Mary Claiborne Rice, widow of Edward and daughter of Col. William Claiborne, of King William Co. They lived in New Kent County, that part later being Hanover, at the Forks, which indictes they were near the junction of the N. and S. branches of the Pamunkey. (Malcolm H. Harris: A History of Louisa County, Va 1936, (VA. L 4b), p. 348 "An old Harris Bible in the possession in 1902 of Mr. E. Stuart Johnson of Richmond, Va., has this record : Robert Harris came from Wales 1650 -1660 and located in the Forks of Hanover, married Mrs. Rice, nee Claiborne, Issue: Col William Harris, Burgess for Hanover also Henrico, married Temperance Overton."
Thomas was killed by Indians in 1725.
Other ord. dates bapt. 20 Oct. 1962 and 8 June 1929: End. 19 Jul 1939 and 23 May 1930. Burgess for Hanover and Henrico Co. Va. History of Virginia Cap. and/or Col. Other Sealed to Parents date: 8 Dec 1992, Lvega. 6 May 2000 - Child 2, Christopher, is not listed on Bill Packer's genealogy sheets. William and Temperance only had ten children acccording to Bill's genealogy. All other info match.
He married Mary Claiborne 1660/74 at Virginia . Mary Claiborne was born at of Hanover, Hanover, Virginia Abt 1630 daughter of William Claiborne, (Clayborne) Colonel and Elizabeth Boteler .
