After some time the Mormons brought them to Slat Lake by wagon train. They made promises which were never fulfilled. The men were kept prisoners in a stockade. After several months they excaped form the Mormons. A band of whites and Indians had been fighting the Mormons so they helped them escape and meet a wagon train. The calvary helped them get away. They went to California with the wagon train. The gold rush was on about 1849. They moved around California and then settled in Nevada in Jacks Valley. Two children were born before they came to Nevada, Anna and Elizabeth. Jane Ann was born in a covered wagon while on their way to Nevada. John worked in the Virginia Silver mines for several years and then retired to his farm where they lived out their lives. Three boys were born in Nevada, Will, John, and Edward.

Notes:
NOTE: Louisa Jane James was born in a covered wagon somewhere in the Rocky Mountains when her parents were crossing the mountains from California on their way to Nevada. She was born in the dead of winter. She went through the Indian outbreak of 1876 when the Indians in the northern part of the country went on the war path. Living on a ranch near Whiterock, she was in the midst of the war. After the Indians visited her cabin and demanded food, she took her family of small children and fled to the town of Corneropia with the other white settlers until the outbreak was settled. Her parents first settled in Carson Valley in the western part of the state, where she spent her girlhood days and where she was married when only 16 years old to Jesse Logan Winter.
