                   BIOGRAPHY: Mary Ann was married at the age of 14, but the first three years of her marriage was childless. Mari Viertel's Aunt Beres believes the marriage was arranged by her ageing father as a way to make sure she would be looked after whan he died and that she remained in her father's house until age 16. The couple spent 20 years in Maitland, Armidale and Murrurundi, New South wales before moving toWarwick, Queensland. The move was precipitated by the gold strike at Talgai and Palgrave. Jacob delivered goods and supplies to the diggers by dray and bulloch wagons. After Jacob died, Mary set up a hotel or boarding house in Ipswich, Queensland and remarried a gentleman named Carroll.
