Research information included in notes Note: According to Ancestral File, William Grainger was born in Caythorpe the son of Mary Thornley. Assuming Ancestral File is genuine, then this is very likely the correct descent, ie born in Carthorpe (in the parish of Burneston) the son of Mary Hornby. On the other hand there was a Grainger family in the parish of Topcliffe having children at the time of William's birth (ie Thomas Grainger and Jane Lumley of Baldersby). The 1823 death date is sourced from Ancestral File, although there is no corresponding burial at Topcliffe. What is certain is that William died before 1851, since his wife Jane was described as a widow in the 1851 census. Whilst 11 of William's 13 children were baptised at Topcliffe, Mary and John were baptised at South Kilvington (about 6 miles away). What I am not sure about is if the family lived in South Kilvington during these years, or if they still lived in Asenby (in the parish of Topcliffe) and just had these children baptised at South Kilvington church. What is certain though is that these children are part of the same family - in particular there are many links in their later lives between Mary and her sister Charlotte (and in the census of 1851-1861 Mary gives her birthplace as Asenby).
He married Jane Horner 12 May 1798 at Topcliffe Parish Church, Yorkshire, England . Jane Horner was born at Topcliffe, Yorkshire, England 7 Sep 1777 daughter of William Horner and Mary Mennil .
