See Wood, Amos D., FLOYD COUNTY, VIRGINIA< ITS PEOPLE AND PLACES, p. 2-4: Samuel W. Agnew settled in the present county of Floyd in the year 1820. He was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia, January 1, 1780 and died in Floyd County, November 17, 1868. He married Susan Preston (June 26, 1785 - April 25, 1854) of Bedford County, Virginia, in 1803 and lived in Bedford County until 1820. He came to the present county of Floyd and settled 2 1/2 miles south of where the county seat is now located. The two Bedford County families who came with him were Francis Hogan, who settled south of the courthouse on lands adjoining Samuel Agnew; and Thomas Lancaster, Sr., who settled three miles east of the courthouse. Samuel Agnew was a prominent farmer and member of the Prmitive Baptist Church. He was largely instrumental in founding and building West Fork Church. He served there as deacon from its organization to the time of his death. When he moved to Floyd County, most of the land was original forest. Reputedly, he purchased about one thousand acres, the greater of which he cleared and cultivated. when the county was organized in 1831, he was one of the largest landowers, as shown by the State Land Tax Books. "Samuel and Susan Agnew had 16 children, three of whom died in infancy, and 12 were married and raised 80 children. There children were:1. Malinda Agnew, died in infancy.2. Easter Agnew (Feb. 25, 1804 - Jan. 2, 1854).3. William B. Agnew (June 5, 1807-June 19, 1854) married Elizabeth Carter June 14, 1827.4. Malinda Agnew (July 20, 1808 - Nov. 9, 1875) named for the first Malinda who died in infancy, married Henry Carter august 31, 1826.5. Charlotte Agnew (Jan. 16, 1810 - ?) married James Cannaday Jan. 12, 18326. Irena Agnew (Oct. 3, 1811 - Dec. 1893) married Ezekial McPeak Sept. 22, 1830.7.
