Obituary of Daniel James Morgan: He waskilled by the accidental discharge of a gun in the hands of Jesse Howard, a 12-year-old boy. On 24 November 1902, Jesse Howard borrowed a 22 target rifle from another boy and was out shooting at birds in the west part of Odessa, Bedford Co., VA. He went into Daniel's yard and Daniel put out a mark to teach the boy how to shoot. After shooting for some time, Mr. Morgan told the boy he must quit and chop some wood. While in a stooping posture cutting wood, he, Daniel, received the shot that ended his life. The bullet entered near the spine and moved upward and probably lodged against the spine so his lower limbs were paralyzed before he died. The boy said the gun went off accidentally, and before dying, Daniel said it was an accident.
He married Bettie Jane Cunningham 15 Mar 1859 at Bedford, Virginia . Bettie Jane Cunningham was born at Franklin, Virginia 1840 daughter of Randolph Cunningham and Martha P. Jones .
