Will of James Scott, dated 18 May 1914
Internet IGI 2005, (Aug)
NOTE: James Alexander Scott was appointed Surveyor of Public Records on 27 Jan 1881. James and Lucy attended the Quaker Baptist Church (formerly known as Difficult Creek Baptist Church). James Alexander Scott always lived his life in Bedford County, Virginia. He was considered and excellent tobacco farmer, and was a Deacon at the Difficult Baptist Church, Body Camp, Virginia. Today this church is known as the Quaker Baptist Church. A plaque notes this in the foyer. He met Lou Ann Miller in Roanoke, Virginia and asked her to marry him. Her family was in the process of leaving for Missouri because of the health of her father, Jacob Bowman Miller. James Scott built a home for his bride and they occupied this site for the remainder of their lives. Uncle Mack Scott, told me personal insights about his parents. They were loving, caring, good neighbors and always helped others if possible. Uncle Mack was the youngest child of the family. He and his wife are buried in the old Scott Cemetery, near Routes 122 & 24 in the south west direction on a small hill. They were buried under a brier patch so the cows couldnt get to the graves. Very small monuments are present for 80% of the graves. (Notes by Melvin Scott Jr.)

Luther James Scott was a warm, well liked person, always considerate and kind. I remember as he operated his Country Store, very old ladies would walk all morning (about 2 to 5 miles, maybe more) to reach him for supplies. He usually drove them home. They would come with a basket of eggs as a means of paying, as cash was not really available. He was a master of the Royal Secret of the 32 Degree of the Ancient and accepted Scottish rite, known to us and duly recognized by us in good standing, residing at Stone Mountain in the State of Virginia. His registrar number is 186818. He always taught me correct principals, but gave me enough freedom to make my own decisions. If I goofed up, then he would help me get it corrected. He cautioned me not to try smoking in the barn, so I wouldnt burn it down, for he knew all young boys try this. As to chewing tobacco, also, dont swallow the juice. I did and got very sick and never tried this again. At his funeral which was held at the home in Bedford County, Virginia, well over a hundred people came. Cars were parked in the yard and on the highway as far as one could see. I could not enter the front room where his body was in its casket, just too moving for a boy of 12. I knew him well and loved him much. His loss was a major void in my life. (Notes by Melvin Scott Jr.)
