                   RESEARCH NOTE:
Records do not exict to conclusively state that Robert is the father of Elizabeth Barnett, but existing records do make a strong case for this connection. Further information included in notes.

1. Text: Robert Barnett: Congregational Ch. Death Record, Bloomfield, Hartford, CT; d. 20 Sep 1760, aged about 75 years; therefore his birth year is estimated to be ca 1685. DEA:3 (7D).2. Text: Henry R. Stiles, M.D., A SUPPLEMENT TO THE HISTORY AND GENEALOGIES OF ANCIENT WINDSOR, CONN., Containing Corrections and Additions Which Have Accrued Since the Publication of That Work (Albany: J. Munsell, 78 State Street, 1863), p. 31. See HIS:5 (7D-E).3. Text: The marriage of Robert Barnard and Ruth Loomis, both of Windsor, was found in Windsor, Connecticut, Births, Marriages, and Deaths, 1638-1910, LDS Film No. 1316427. Two problems are evident in this record. The first is that Robert's last name is given as Barnard. He appears in Windsor land records in 1749 as Robert Barnett, and he is possibly the Robert Barnard in land records of 1733. Robert is not a name in other Barnard records of Windsor. His name in Bloomfield Church records is clearly written Barnett. Second, there is no record of a Ruth Loomis born to anyone who would have been of the age of Ruth Barnett when she died. Clearly, this is Ruth Brown. See HIS: 7-8 (7E).There has been no official document that states that Robert BARNETT is the father of our John BARNETT. However, since Robert shows up in Windsor, Hartford, CT, and no other BARNETT person lives in the vicinity, circumstantial evidence would tell me that Robert is the most likely candidate to be John's father. Careful analysis and evaluation still needs to be done.I happen to think that Robert is the son of John BARNETT of Londonderry, Rockingham Co., NH. This John was born about 1754 and is from Londonderry, Ireland. Some of the descendants of John of Londonderry, NH, were named Robert. Robert, born 1685, would have been the eldest known son of John and could have decided not to stay in Londonderry.I don't know why John and Rebecca (Holcombe) BARNETT didn't name one of their children Robert unless they did and the child was stillborn and not recorded in Windsor Vital Records. This fact does throw some doubt that Robert is the father of John Barnett (14/112).According to THE HISTORY AND GENEALOGIES OF ANCIENT WINDSOR, CONNECTICUT, Including East Windsor, South Windsor, Bloomfield, Windsor Locks, and Ellington 1635-1891, by Henry R. Stiles, A.M., M.D., Vol. I History, (Hartford, CT: Press of the Case, Lockwood and Brainard Co., 1891), pp. 292-294, Chapter XVI, "Ecclesiastical - Wintonbury Parish, or Fifth Society in Windsor (Now Bloomfield), 1734-1891 in a list of petitioners in 1734 in a district known as "Messenger's Farms" in the southwest part of Windsor (now called Old Farms), praying that they might be allowed "winter privileges." which was deemed a reasonable request and "winter privileges" were granted them from the first of November to the last of March, and for two years until 1736; Robert Barrett was listed. I believe the name should have been "Barnett" because the earliest Barrett family in Windsor came in 1758, and there were none with the name Robert among them. See Barnett Documents: His:4 (7D-E)On page 294, we have the following: "A church consisting of 67 members (31 males and 36 females was organized on the 14th of February, 1738, and on the next day the Rev. Hezekiah Bissell was ordained as its pastor..." Note that among the members was Robert Barnett and wife, so this shows that Robert Barnett had married again at least by this date. Others in the church who were related to this family were Peletiah Mills and wife, Jonathan Brown (father of Ruth Brown who married Robert Barnett) and Peter Mills's wife. See HIS:1-4 (7E).One would have to ask if Robert and Mary had other children. There is a possibility that Moses Barnett who settled in Rensselaer Co., New York is also Robert's son. He was born about the same time as Robert's son, John. John and Moses may have been twins as they were each born about the same year. The name Moses Barnett also has been found amongst the family in Londonderry, New Hampshire. The first John there named one of his sons, Moses. Another interesting fact to tie th
is family together is the area of Amenia, New York where David and Isabelle (Barnett) Brown and James and his brother John Barnett, sons of John and Rebecca (Holcombe) settled. Isabelle was the probable daughter of Robert Barnett of Windsor, so Isabelle would have been the aunt of James and John Barnett. The name has been spelled variously as Barnet and Barnett. Some Windsor printed records show the name as Barnard, but the original vital records of Windsor show the name as Barnet or Barnett, never Barnard. There was an early Barnard family in Windsor, Connecticut, but the name Robert does not appear among them.Robert Barnett bought land in Windsor late in the 1720s. I've not recorded the land deeds so do not have specific details. This record may not be quoted publicly, and personal credit to my name, Joanne E. Martin, should be stated when sharing this information.
