NOTE: Biographical detail in PAF Notes Virkus's "Immigrant Ancestors" states "from Eng.; first record of him in America, when he became an original founder and propr. of Portsmouth, R.I., 1638".Roger's "Brownell Genealogy" says "He went to Rhode Island with Roger Williams for conscience sake."Randall "Descendants of James, Son of John Tripp" says "landed Newport 1630" and "was apprenticed to the house carpentry trade and with his Master, Randall Holden, came to Newport or Portsmouth in 1630".-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------"Hon. John Tripp, the first American ancestor of the family in question, was one of the founders and proprietors of Portsmouth, R.I., 23d of 6th month, 1638. He held various offices in the town and was representative or commissioner to various courts in 1651, 1654, 1655 and 1661. He was assistant or of the governor's council in 1648 and 1670, 1673, 1674 and 1675."-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------"Portsmouth, R.I.He was a carpenter.1638. He was admitted an inhabitant of the island of Aquidneck.1639, 4, 30. He and twenty-eight others signed following compact: "We, whose names are underwritten, do acknowledge ourselves the legal subjects of his Majesty King Charles, and in his name do hereby bind ourselves into a vivil body politic, unto his laws according to matters of justice."1643, 3, 1. He was granted three acres of land next to Thomas Gorton.1648, '54, '55, '58, '61, '62, '63, '64, '66, '67, '68, '69, '72. Deputy.1649, 10, 2. He and wife Mary gave receipt to Rose Weeden, widow of Anthony Paine, for legacy from the will of the latter.1655. Commissioner.1655. Freeman1657, 11, 30. He was granted land on Hog Island, for a term of seven years.1660, 2, 6. He, calling himself about forty-nine years old, gave testimony that he had heard his uncle, Robert Potter, say that he had sold a certain house and land to John Anthony.1665, 9, 8. He sold his son Peleg 1/4 of the section of land in Dartmouth formerly bought of John Alden.1666, 12, 8. Whereas, Mary Tripp, wife of John Tripp, Sr., some twenty-five years ago, bought Richard Searle for a pint of wine three acres of land, the said Richard Searle living then in Portsmouth, she being then unmarried, about which time Searle removed but left no deed to Mary, now therefore said sale is confirmed by commissioners.1670, '73, '74, '75. To wife, all his estate, consisting of lands, goods and chattels, movable and immovable, during her natural life, "only my old house excepted, or north end of my building which I have given to my son John Tripp formerly."To son John, house, lot, and ten acres of land in the clay pit field, and meadows at Hog Island; and all fencing, houses, orchards, etc., "excepting my new house or south end of my building," etc. To son Abiel, the south half of building last alluded to with lot adjoining, and other land; and Abiel was to pay £5 to his brother Peleg, and £10 to his brother Joseph. To son James, 1/8 of a share of land at Dartmouth, and rights in land lying in the Narragansett County and Westerly. To daughter Martha, £20, and to grandchild Elizabeth Wodell, £10."1685, Jan. 15. Stephen Manchester and Elizabeth gave receipt of £10, legacy from will of John Tripp to his granddaughter Elizabeth Wodell, who Stephen had married; the said John Tripp's widow and executrix Mary, having married Benjamin Engell and these two last named having delivered £10, to Peleg Tripp, uncle to Elizabeth, for her use. Receipt was now given for same by Elizabeth, to both her uncle Peleg and Benjamin Engell and Mary. 2 3
