Colonel in Tennessee Militia, commanded a regiment. Submitter: Richard W. Stokes who was residing in Logan, Utah in 1956. He was the 2 gg son of this couple. Family moved to Osage, Carroll Co., Arkansas about 1837. Rest of children were born there. About 1840 the first county jail in Carrolton was built by James C. Chaney of Osage. The 1860 census for Osage Twp, Carroll Co., AR shows James C. Chaney with $3300 in real estate and $5560 in personal property. Prior to 1850 and before 1855, there was a land entry for James C. Chaney: Section 1- - Twp 18, Range 23, 40 acres section 20. There was also one for Robert D. Chaney, Twp 17, Range 23, 15 acres. These were in Osage. There is a conflict regarding the place James died. Evelyn Fons says both James and Nancy are buried at Protem, Missouri and also Dean and Burr. Another report is that James and Nancy, Columbus and Winnie and their son, Phineas are all buried at Lead Hill, AR in a private cemetery. Protem is on the MO/AR border. Evelyn is the great granddaughter of George Ann Chaney Jenkins. James C. Chaney was a mule and horse trader. He took horses to the south to cotton country. He had a mortgage for $22,200 and borrowed money from "Ole Bill Sneed" to pay the mortgage on the farm. Jesse Gerald Chaney...who believes his great grandfather was James C. Chaney...told Evelyn Fons the family is Scotch-Irish and came from England through Virginia, Tennessee and Arkansas. Pearl Coffman McLean also said the Chaney's came from England. At Carroll Co., in the Archives Bldg there are some old microfilm of land grants, wills, etc. County records. The Historical library is in the Centennial building next door. The old newspapers are on the third floor.
Buried in Carrolton Hollow Cemetery.? Pearl Coffman McLean, born 11 Dec 1891, remembers seeing her grandmother, Nancy Chaney. She described her as small, a little dried-up woman who had a cancer by her nose and no teeth. The children all loved to get her to sing "Old Black Joe" because her chin almost touched her nose. Then they would laugh. The 1880 census shows Nancy Chaney living with Columbus and Winnie in Osage. Nancy was 72 years of age at this time. She was 87 when she died. Pearl Coffman McLean says there was a Spanish Land Grant involved but she was not sure where it came in. She was very positive there was a grant, however. Jesse Gerald Chaney told Evelyn Fons that Nancy Sehorn may be "Black Dutch". His father said one of her grandmothers was Black Dutch..a descendant of the Spanish who conquered Holland. This could be where the land grant comes in. The government approved the grant which was very large. The whole family lived on the property from this grant. Alice Wright Stokes also mentioned that Nancy D. Sehorn was Dutch from Holland. Richard Stokes 's mother spoke of visiting Nancy Dilckey Seahorn and said of her to be a loveable dutch lady. Many dutch immigrated into Penn. and there has been publilshed speculation that the Seahorns immigrated From Penn to Carolinas Nancy was black dutch. descendant of the spanish who conquered Holland..
