Henry Frederick CLAUSEN
Services in the Congregational Church of Pemberton, Minn 2:00 June 3, 1934. Henry's father died when he was but a young lad. He then had to help support the rest of the family. When he was 12 or 13 years old, he migrated to the U.S with his mother and sister. He first settled near Winona City, then moved to Rochester, Minn. where he met Christina Schiltz Stelgelham (???) whom he married in 1879. When he wished for a home of his own, he moved to or near Tyler, Minn., where he lived for two years. He then moved to Pipestone, Minn. where he filed for a homestead. Here their three sons John, Conrad, and Henry jr. were born. Because of severe wind and hail storms in westen Minnesota, he moved with his family in 1894 to a farm two miles south of Pemberton, Minn. His mother, who was living with him, had died in January of 1894 before the move to Pemberton. His sons married and he turned the home farm over to Conrad, who soon purchased it. Conrad said: Henry came to the U.S. when he was about 12. He never mentioned his father but spokeabout his uncle who was a shipbuilder or in charge of shipping. Young Henry slept in the sails sometimes. They traveled to London to the shipyards apparently, before sailing for the U.S. and arriving in NYC June 1967 Death info from Mankato courthouse: Henry's death was from senility, nheumonia, and chronic nephritis He had bright's disease (kidneys) lasting two years one month, according to records from the Mankato courthouse (5-19-97). He was 78 years 7 months and 30 days. His parents are listed as John Clausen and Katherine Stolz, born in Denmark. Attending phys. J.C. Vezina.
Married in the presence of C. Hagedorn and Johann Winfen (hard to read) Olmsted Co. Court House ( copied May 20, 1969.) Family says her name is Christina Schiltz or Schilz and she is from Rochester, Minn. She may have had a previous marriage. There is a family of Schiltz in Rochester, a brother Jake and several sisters, who were mentioned by family in Minnesota. She was called "Tina". Found in 1870 census living next door to family where Henry Clausen resided at age 14. Christina was Catholic and her first child was to be Catholic too. First son, John was Cath. and later joined Lutheran Church, according to family. 1900 census shows parents of Christina, William Schiltz and Mary Miller, were both born in Germany. She died at 90 years 2 months 6 days and was a housewife.
Probably born in Fountain Prairie Township (place of death record of his grandmother, Kati Clausen), at the homestead of his father, Henry Clausen.
