Notes for Benjamin STERRETT He arrived PA 1722, relative John Immigration CD #354 -- Bolton, Scottish History No mention of minor children or wife The youngest Mary would then have been born in US if same person and immigration date correct. from Rick Cunningham-- Benjamin died from a broken back, caused by a fall from his horse on a steep and rocky hill. Benjamin was employed as a church treasurer in The Church of East Donegal. he immigrated about 1730 to New Castle, Pennsylvania. He received a grant of 218 2/3 acres on 19 July 1738 in Donegal Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Family tradition states that Benjamin, Isabelle and their family came to America about 1730 from Ireland (having lived there after fleeing Scotland to evade those opposed to their religious beliefs.) They settled in Chester County (which later became Lancaster County, now Dauphin County), Pennsylvania. They lived near Swatara Creek. Lettes of administration were issued to Benjamin's widow, Isabelle Mayes Sterrett on the 17th day of March 1739 and to John Sterrett and Andrew Mayes (fther-in-law of Cairns? (brother to Isabelle?) as sureties. Benjamin's will left the land to his children, John, James, Cairs, and daughter Mary Kennedy. NOTES FOR ISABELLE MAYES: The Mayes is due to Rick Cunningham. Other histories have this as unknown. I doubt this connection. I believe Andrew Mayes to be the son of James, brother of Thomas and James. James came to Pennsylvania abou tthe same time as Benjamin with his three sons. James was born in Irelan.d Other children were born in Pennsylvania. Benjamin was already married in Scotland before moving through Ireland to Pewnnsylvania. He probably hooked up with James in Ireland, and they may have come to the colonies together--Bob June 2000

Notes from Rich Cunningham-- concerning James Sterrett b. 1705 in Scotland d. 1761, Springfield, Chester, PA buried, Middle Octoro Church, Lancaster Co., PA James died without children and left his share of Benjamin's land to his brother Cains Sterrett The Sterrett genealogy does not mention James birth/death dates. I don't know where I got the dates. A deed of transfer (March 26, 1759) suggests James is already dead The dates are thus suspect. -- BOB, June 2000
Notes for Robert STERRETT: from T. Woods Sterrett There is no actual proof that he was Benjamin's son. Said to have been born in Scotland, died in what was then Lancaster, now Dauphin, PA in April 1977. He is thought to have been a son of Benjamin Sterrett The traditional story of his life is that as a young boy, he fled with his parents, borthers and two sisters from Scotland to the north of Ireland to evade those opposed to their religious beliefs. In Donegal Co., Ireland. He married Mary Ramsey, said to have been born about 1707. Mary Sterrett, listed as 80 years of age is given among the members of the Big Spring Church in Cumberland Valley, in 1789. They emigrated to American about 1730, settling in what was then Chester, later Lancaster, and now Daughin County on Swarta Creek.. On the 4th day of Feb., 1755, the Proprietors of Pennsylvania granted him a warrant for one hundred and fifty acres of land in Lower Paxtang Township, now Daughin Co., upon which e resided until his death, April 1777. He left a will which is recorded in Lancaster County, Book C., Page 46, wherein he names is wife and the following children: William, said to have been 3 years old when his father came to America, md. Jane Morrow. James Agnes Mary David Robert Note the above dates for William would suggest that William was born about 1726-27. I have Agnes as born in Pennsylvania in 1730, but William as born in Scotland in 1724 making the emigration date 1727-28. But.. I have Benjamin arriving as early as 1722. --Bob Sterrett
