John STOCK

Birth:
12 Oct 1820
Bathurst, Gambia, Cape Colony, South Africa
Death:
19 Oct 1896
Fish Haven, Bear Lake, Idaho
Burial:
Fish Haven, Bear Lake, Idaho
Marriage:
7 Dec 1861
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah
Notes:
A FGS found in file provides sealing date to Susan Mary Thompson; 8 Jan 1905, which was done as described below after John Stock's death. The file also gives DOB of Mary as 19 May 1824, Ramsgate, Kent, England. (comment by FJR Oct 18, 2002)

NOTE:
Ord work has been done several times.
1993: FGS (Ephraim Stock's Gen Book) found this note: Susan Mary Thompson was sealed to John Stock at the instance of J. W. Edwin Stock, Jun. 8, 1905- Louisa E. Stock, proxy (record of John Wm Edwin Stock).
Birth Place: Recorded differently on some FGS. Such as: Cape of Good Hope; Bathurst, Cape Colony; Near Grahamstown, Cape Colony all in South Africa. Bathurst is near Grahamstown and both are in the Cape Colony province of South Africa.
** Marriage Date: TIB file and as a result some FGS record John Stock and Jane Adams marriage date as occuring in 1842. This is in error. The Adams family left England and while on the ocean to South Africa Jane had a baby (illegitemate- it is reported that she had been engaged to a Mr. Dewey/ Newey). This child, Mary Ann was born 27 Sep 1842. It is therefore impossible for Jane and John to have been married in Feb 1842. [A note found in J-Stock file gave Marriage date as March 4, 1844 with a note to check- no resolution indicated.][Annie Jane Cottle Stock's Journal- has marriage: 13 Feb 1944.
[Mary Ann is regarded by all to be part of John Stock/Jane Adams family and she is shown as the first child on many FGS; however, in this record she is shown on a seperate FGS with her mother - technically this is the correct way to show Mary Ann. Mary Ann is sealed to John Stock and Jane.]

14 Feb 1855, Baptized by Leonard P. Smith (South Africa).
14 Feb 1855, Confirmed by Leonard P. Smith (South Africa).
1861, Ordained a Seventy (Salt Lake City). 62nd Quorum ofSeventy.

NOTE on back of FGS in family file:
John Stock went out as a tanners apprentice. He learned much. His master was Dutch and very strict. Food was scarce. John rose to be a man of wealth. He became superintendant of many tanneries. He had whaling vessels that sailed off the Cape. He bred race horses. Sent his children to college. Baptized a Mormon in 1853 (5) he was soon President of Branch. He was very generous with his means.
He fitted out a ship to sent to Utah. He sent his sister, too. She got in a hand cart co. and died on the way over.
John Stock and family came to Utah in 1860. Had endowments. Called to Bear Lake to settle. Was Bishop for years. Was Patriarch when he died. Was known as Father of the Ward. He had a grey horse and rode around the town. He took care of people.
He sacrificed all his wealth for the gospel. Soon after he arrived in Utah, the Church sent him back to Africa on a mission and he was to settle his affairs there. On the way he stopped at England. His cousin, Mary Thompson who married Lord John Russel, showed him a royal time. He sat in the chair of Queen Victoria.
He left for Africa. The ship sprung a leak. The Captain said they would not get to shore on time. Stock assured him they would. Captain said he would give Stock a silk hat if they arrived in schedueled time. The arrived in time and John Stock won a silk stove pipe hat.
The three missionaries from Salt Lake to convert the Stock family, Jesse Haven, William H. Walker, Leonard I. Smith. They brought gospel to Stock family in South Africa, Port Elizabeth in 1853 (54). John Stock was first to join Church. Ebenezer Richardson and Samuel Brooks were next two missionaries to come to South Africa.
On Oct 25, 1855 there was a special conference, held at Port Elizabeth, So. Africa under the direction of Elder Lenard I. Smith. Elder Smith was called to be the president of a company of Saints coming to Utah, and Elder John Stock was appointed to succeed Elder Smith as President of the Branch of the Church in Port Elizabaeth, Oct. 25, 1855 with Elders Slaughter and Allison as 1st and 2nd Counselors. John Stock owned considerable property at Port Elizabeth. March 28, 1863 they expected to sail for New York, but were delayed 30 days. On April 30, 1863 the ship "Henry Ellis" with Captain Phillips sailed for New York with 32 saints on board - including John Stock and Family. (Record of South African Mission). NOTE: This date is in error as the Stock family were in Salt Lake City in 1860 and then John Stock came back to S-Africa on a mission in 1861.

A more detailed account of the Stock, Gilson, Adams families in South Africa is found in "Joseph Pierce Stock and Annie Jane Cottle and their Pioneer Ancestors and Descendants" by F. John Roberts yr 2000. Descedants of John Stock are contained in F. John Roberts PAF file "Cousins"
